Why is networking important

Having a well-established network has become an important part of our lives. The easiest way to expand your network is to build on the relationships with people you know; family, friends, classmates, colleagues and acquaintance’s. Actually, we are all expanding our networks daily. Think about it, who would you ask if you needed and electrician, a plumber, a dry-waller, a painter or landscaper? You would likely ask a family member, friend or close colleague if they know anyone they would recommend or maybe you would go to Angie’s List or the Better Business Bureau. These are all ways of networking.

5 Reasons why networking is important:

1. Networking can help you start your own business
2. networking can help you climb the career ladder
3. Networking is a long-term investment
4. Networking leads to lifelong friendships
5. networking is encouraged by Business schools

Today networking has become an essential aspect of your job search. Even if you are well established in your job and have no plans of moving or advancing your career soon, networking has proven to be a valuable tool. You must develop relationships and connections within your network to have more opportunities to advance your career.   Attending meetings and social events hosted by your professional association is a great way to connect with people in your field.

Only 11 days away from our 2018 Rookie Entrepreneurship Program!

The Rookie Entrepreneur Program 2018

The Center for Hispanic Entrepreneurship and the Mike Loya Center for Innovation and Commerce have teamed up to create the Rookie Entrepreneur Program, an intensive week long summer camp held by the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso. The REP provides a practicum of entrepreneurship in a multidisciplinary setting, where students are given the opportunity to learn how to start a business from the ground up, learn how profit works, and are encouraged to take the necessary steps to become entrepreneurs by experiencing various positions that are typically seen in a real business scenario. The past two years the REP was a two day program held in the summer of 2014 & 2015 which consisted with a first day of training and a second day of practicum around the COBA. Due to such success the REP has been redesigned to provide high school students a better understanding of business foundation knowledge and comprehensive business exercises via marketing, accounting, finance, fundraising, pitching, management, and research classes among others. The program will consist of Monday through Friday classes with top mentors from the college of business administration, networking with top local entrepreneurs, business etiquette dinner, golf class, breakfast and lunch, business and entrepreneurship courses and more.

The Center for Hispanic Entrepreneurship invites any high school student interested in business to join our fun energy-fulled summer camp on July 16 - 21, 2018. To register or further questions please contact Aaron Cervantes at arcervantes@utep.edu (915) 747-6157 or Denisse Olivas at dolivas@utep.edu (915) 747-7738.

Women Entrepreneurs

In the TEDx Janpath, Ameera Shah, an Indian entrepreneur talks about the challenges and stereotypes she confronted as a women in her journey of growing her business.  Even though she specifically targets Indian stereotypes, I could not help but notice the similarities of some of the stories I have heard among my friends and peers.  Ameera talks about some of the questions she got during her journey.  Questions that involve marriage, children and how they "affect" a women's involvement in work projects. As a young woman that as Ameera, also aspires to be become a leader in business, I find family and friends asking me similar if not the same type of questions.
Ameera believes that Indian women suffer from the lack of self belief, promoted by the environment they are in.  I also believe this is the case not only for India, but in many places in the globe as well.  Since as I have previously stated, many of my peers have faced similar stereotypes in the United States.  I ahve also encountered similar concerns among my friends in Mexico and South Korea.
Ameera shares that since infancy, this environment that women grow into continuously lower their confidence such that women believe the best thing one can do is to get married to a good man who will provide for you.
'While the eco-system is going to take long to change, the only thing that we really can change in life is ourselves," shares Ameera.  Many women around the world are working to change the eco-system in which we live in, however the process is slow and will take long. Ameera proposes to change oneself instead of trying to change everyone else. Boost your self esteem, build your confidence, and go against the challenges in life. As Ameera shares, self-esteem is the only real asset life.

The Fourth Annual Rookie Entrepreneur Program Is Approaching!

According to the 2015 Geoscape report, Hispanics in the U.S. are more likely to become entrepreneurs.  Unfortunately Hispanic businesses are more likely to fail, or stop growing.  Some of the factors that influence the failure of Hispanic business are access to capital, lack of knowledge and networking opportunities.  On 2017 UTEP will host the fourth annual Rookie Entrepreneur Program.  The REP is a week long program with the objective of providing high school students with the necessary foundations to start up their own business. This program does not only provide the necessary knowledge, but it also gives the students the opportunity to have a hands-on experience.

The Rookie Entrepreneur Program is a great way to get a head start on your career!  The fourth annual Rookie Entrepreneur Program will be taking place on July 17 – 22 of 2017.
